Hollywood actress Penelope Cruz says that every woman should try scuba diving with sharks at least once in their lifetime. The Spanish actress, who is famous for her role in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", has dived with reef sharks in the Caribbean but said she would only ever get close to great white sharks if she was in a cage.

When Penelope Cruz isn't appearing in films, the Hollywood actress likes to spend time exploring the beautiful underwater world and its inhabitants.

The Spanish actress has been scuba diving with sharks and says she enjoys watching the marine creatures when she's underwater.

When asked what she thought every woman should try at least once in their lifetime, Penelope said:

"Scuba diving--with sharks. I've done it in the Caribbean and Brazil. I think they were lemon sharks or reef sharks. If I ever do it with a great white shark, it will be in a cage. I'm not crazy."

The 40-year-old star has starred in numerous films, including Vanilla Sky, Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Nine, and she is married to fellow actor Javier Bardem and the couple have two young children.

Scuba diving with sharks has become an increasingly popular activity for adrenalin-seeking holidaymakers and the Caribbean is a fantastic place to enjoy an underwater adventure.

The Bahamas is a hotspot for shark diving and during underwater tours at resorts, such as Stuart's Cove, divers can catch sightings of Tiger Sharks, Lemons, Caribbean Reef sharks and Great Hammerheads.

Reef shark populations across the world have been declining over recent years due to people catching them for their fins, which then get sold on to restaurants in Asia for shark fin soup. However, governments in the Caribbean and countries like the Maldives are keen to promote shark diving activities to help protect the beautiful creatures and boost tourism.

Reef sharks fish grow slowly and take a long time to reach sexual maturity, so the reproduction of the species is slow.

Shark diving excursions during scuba diving holidays raise more revenue for tourist destinations and the population of sharks could have the chance to regenerate if the global tourism industry understands the positive impact it has on the economy.
