Larnaca's tourism board has announced the launch of Zenobia Week, a wreck diving promotional campaign that will take place in June this year. The tourism campaign will promote the Zenobia shipwreck and Cyprus as a destination for scuba diving activities, while holding events including underwater photography competitions and free trips to the wreck.

The tourism board in Larnaca, Cyprus has announced that is will be launching Zenobia Week in June this year.

Zenobia Week will be a wreck diving promotional campaign that will focus on promoting the famous Zenobia shipwreck as well as raising awareness about the region as a fantastic scuba diving destination.

The event will take place from 23rd to 30th June, 2014 and will feature underwater photography competitions, free twice-daily scuba diving trips to the sunken shipwreck, an exhibition with memorabilia from the ship, and seminars about safe wreck diving.

The Swedish-built Zenobia ferry sank on her first voyage in 1980 while carrying £200 million of cargo aboard. The 90-foot-long wreck now lies on its side at the bottom of Larnaca Bay and has become one of the island’s most popular scuba diving destinations.

Voted as one of the ten best wreck diving sites by The Times in 2003, Zenobia is a fantastic diving site thanks to the excellent visibility, warm all-year-round water temperature, and reassurance that the sea surrounding the island is generally safe.

During the lead-up to Zenobia Week, the Larnaca municipality and the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association are planning to clean rubbish from the shipwreck’s surrounding area.

Cyprus is one of the most popular scuba diving destinations in the Mediterranean Sea and the ocean waters are teeming with ancient shipwreck, reefs and diverse marine species.

The dive season in Cyprus runs from March to October or November, making it a leading destination for scuba diving holidays in the Mediterranean.

Wreck diving is becoming an increasingly popular sport and some of the world’s most popular sunken vessels include the German Battleship Bismarck which is located off the coast of France; USS Spiegel Grove in Florida; Zenobia in Cyprus; Hilma Hooker in Bonaire; USS Kittiwake in the Cayman Islands; and the Thistlegorm in the Red Sea.
