A 10-year-old water enthusiast has become the UK's youngest open water diver after he completed his scuba diving exam. Kai Slatter from Pontefract has always been a water baby and he became interested in learning how to dive after his father took up the underwater sport five years ago. Kai became certified two days after his tenth birthday.

A 10-year-old boy has become the youngest certified open water diver in the UK after passing his exam two days after his tenth birthday. Kai Slatter from Pontefract completed his scuba diving certification on 30th July, 2013 and he had been studying for the exam for a couple of months prior to his birthday.

"It's a fantastic achievement. He doesn't realise, being just ten, what an achievement it is, he's taken it all in his stride," said Kai's 36-year-old mother, Emma.

The young scuba diving enthusiast became interested in the sport because his dad, Jonathan has been a keen diver for the last five years.

"Kai's wanted to have a go but had to wait until he was ten do to the training. Normally children start diving at about 14," commented Emma.

Kai took his written exam and got 46 out of 50 correct answers at the Above and Below dive centre at Womersley. The father and son soon put their underwater skills to the test after recently enjoying scuba diving holidays in Egypt.

Emma added: "Jonathan is over the moon he doesn't have to have strangers as diving buddies, and he can now go diving with his son."

Scuba diving adventures are becoming increasingly popular for people who are looking to explore the magnificent underwater world in oceans and lakes all over the globe.

Popular scuba diving destinations include Bonaire, the Cayman Islands and Curacao in the Caribbean; the Maldives, Mauritius and the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean; Florida in the United States, and Egypt.

Home to the Red Sea, Egypt is one of the world's leading destinations for scuba diving trips. The Ras Mohammed National Park on the tip of the Sinai Peninsula is home to 20 diving sites, including two submerged peaks, Yolanda Reef and Shark Reef, as well as a plethora of tropical fish, sharks and beautiful diverse marine creatures.
