An underwater art gallery has been set up in one of the world's most beautiful scuba diving destinations but visitors won't have to go underwater to view the artwork. Divers placed the pieces for the "Phantasy Fairytale" show by photographer, Andreas Franke, beneath two luxury resorts in the Maldives: Huvafen Fushi and NIYAMA.

An underwater art gallery is providing entertainment for guests staying at two exclusive resorts in the Indian Ocean. The show, by Viennese photographer Andreas Franke, was set up by divers in one of the world's most popular scuba diving destinations, the Maldives.

Titled, Phantasy Fairytale, the art exhibition can only be viewed beneath the surface of the ocean at Huvafen Fushi, which was where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes spent their honeymoon, and NIYAMA.

A statement from Per AQUUM, the parent company of both Maldives resorts read:

"The exhibition magically combines photography, nautical exploration and digital mastery to produce compelling underwater dream worlds where Western fairytale characters are creatively superimposed against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean. Each piece ... blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy, with saltwater and algae adding the final artistic touches."

Some of the fairytale characters include Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, the Last Unicorn, the Snow Queen and the orphan girl from Grimm's "The Star Money."

Guests can enjoy viewings of the artwork without having to get wet because the pieces (starting from $12,000) have been sealed in stainless steel and Plexiglas frames and placed outside the windows of Huvafen Fushi's LIME Spa and NIYAMA's Subsix music club.

Franke, a scuba diving enthusiast, explained:

"With my photographs, I want to pull the spectators into unreal and strange worlds. Mystified scenes of a fairytale play within a fictional space. Dream worlds you can get lost in, or that you can identify with. This creates a new and unexpected atmosphere. This work shows very much of myself, since I am always on the lookout for stunning themes to create new images that have never been seen before."

Made up of 1,200 stunning coral islands, the Maldives is a popular destination for scuba diving holidays due to crystal-clear turquoise waters that are thriving with diverse marine life. South Ari Atoll is a popular diving destination and its diving sites include the Kudarah Thila and Digurah Thila.

While scuba diving in the Maldives, divers can swim in warm waters alongside manta rays, several species of turtles, eagles rays, and schools of tropical fish. Visitors can get close to the fragile reefs and thriving sea gardens, as well as underwater caves sea walls that are perfect for exploring undiscovered underwater flora and exotic species.
