Scuba Diving magazine has named Bermuda as the best destination for wreck diving in the Caribbean and Atlantic. The award was given to the Caribbean island as part of the 2014 Reader's Choice Awards after it was recognised for its 300 wreck diving sites, collection of shipwrecks, and huge variety of stunning marine wildlife.

The island of Bermuda has been recognised in Scuba Diving magazine's 2014 Reader's Choice Awards as the No.1 Wreck Diving destination in the Caribbean and Atlantic.

The tropical island was recognised as a wreck diving hotspot thanks to its 300 diving sites, collection of shipwrecks, and huge variety of stunning marine wildlife.

"We'd like to thank the readers of Scuba Diving for this tremendous recognition," commented Bill Hanbury, the CEO of the Bermuda Tourism Authority. "We know that divers are always searching for locations that provide them with the opportunity to discover something special. We offer them an incredible variety of opportunities to explore our famous reefs and marvel at the beauty and history on display."

Bermuda's Cristobal Colon wreck was also named as the "Best Wreck Dive" in the magazine's Top 100 Gold List. The luxury liner sank in 1936 and is the nation's largest shipwreck, measuring 499 feet in length.

The island is a hotspot for scuba diving holidays and it offers a huge variety of wrecks to explore thanks to more than 400 years of underwater maritime history. Sunken vessels include famous Spanish galleons, freighters and war ships dating back to the late 1900's. Many of the diving sites can be reached within a short boat ride of the sandy shores.

"Bermuda with its more than 300 wreck diving sites, each with a diverse array of marine wildlife and fish, many of which are unique to Bermudian waters, is a perfect dive location and offers another area of potential growth," added Mr Hanbury.

The island is one of the Caribbean's leading scuba diving destinations due to its unique pink sand beaches that are fringed with crystal clear, turquoise ocean waters, 200-square miles of thriving colourful coral reefs, and an array of spectacular sea creatures such as parrotfish, angelfish, crabs and seahorses.
