La posa de Milita - Havana

Diving in Havana is excellent, and there is a choice of dive centres to take your trip with.

Situated on a private marina some 20 minutes from the city centre is Marina Tarara – a perfect place for the non-diving members of your group to spend the morning on the soft sandy beach, complete with showers, a cafe and toilets.

A fast boat takes you out to the reef for this dive site, and after approximately 15 minutes, you are over the coral and getting ready to drop down into the depths.

Steep, deep, dark and atmospheric are the words we would use to describe this site – the drop off goes beyond 60 metres. A vertical wall, massaged by gentle current provides the back drop, and the hard and soft corals are plentiful, including Cuba's famous black coral.

Lobsters of immense size fill every nook and cranny, and even large sea 'lice' can be spotted here. Nudibranchs adorn the gorgonian fans and whips, and anemones the size of dinner plates are common too. Plenty for the photographer, and with the darkness in the background, your shots will be very impressive!

Marine life is plentiful too – schools of large snapper, spadefish and grunts patrol the wall edge, and free swimming morays are again common, some approaching 2.5 metres in length.

Barrel sponges and black corals give home to brittle stars, arrow crabs and the left overs from a meal – octopi use them as bins for conch shells – so it is worth peeking into everything that you see!

A stunning dive – dramatic topography, gentle current, and healthy marine life everywhere. Awesome!
